What is Botox ®, and Xeomin ®?

Botox, and Xeomin are all botulinum toxin products that are intended to relax muscles that cause wrinkles. These products treat lines on the forehead, around the eyes, crow’s feet wrinkles, and lines around the nose. They are also used for treating the pebbly appearance of the chin, narrowing the shape of the jaw, and correcting oily skin and large pores. Botox is also used to lift the face by relaxing the muscles that pull the face and corners of the mouth down (the “Nefertiti Lift”).

Xeomin is currently the purest botulinum toxin on the market in the USA. The more muscular a face, the more product is needed. One reason Xeomin is preferable to Botox is because of its purity. While many patients can develop antibodies to Botox and find it less effective over time, Xeomin has been noted to not have this effect, leading to the idea that the body makes fewer neutralizing antibodies to Xeomin.

When you are receiving neurotoxin injections, the area is first cleaned to sterilize the skin. Many patients elect to use topical numbing cream that contains lidocaine, though most patients do not need any anesthetic at all. Using very small microneedles, the neurotoxin is then injected just under the dermis of the skin throughout the area to be treated.

Recovery from neurotoxin injections is typically very smooth. The site may be red for a few hours, and can possibly form some mild bruising. Patients typically resume normal activity the same day. The effects are usually noticeable within 48 hours, and results last 3-6 months.

There is a possibility to be allergic to almost any chemical. The number of patients with proven allergic reactions to Botox is minimal. In my 15 year practice, I have not seen an allergic reaction to Botox. I have examined patients who developed neutralizing antibodies to Botox, which block the anti-wrinkle function of Botox. Since starting to use Xeomin, I have yet to see neutralizing antibodies formed to Xeomin.

There is no study proving the safety of botulinum toxin during pregnancy or breastfeeding, therefore it is not recommended to get neurotoxin injections during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
