Fractional Skin Resurfacing

If you want to improve the appearance of your skin, you may be interested in learning more about fractional skin resurfacing.

Fractional skin resurfacing can improve the appearance of – and in some cases, remove entirely – wrinkles, superficial scars, age / liver spots, port wine stains, café au lait spots, and other skin discolorations.

What is fractional skin resurfacing?

Fractional skin resurfacing is a skin rejuvenation treatment performed by a board-certified dermatologist who is using a certain type of laser. The laser targets thin sections of skin and destroys the targeted skin. As the wound heals, new skin grows to replace damaged skin. The new skin is healthier and tighter than the skin that was damaged by the laser, therefore producing a better overall appearance.

How is fractional skin resurfacing different from other types of laser resurfacing treatments?

Older forms of laser treatments destroyed whole areas of the skin. Fractional lasers target microscopic columns of skin and leave surrounding non targeted skin intact. The result is that patients see positive results but have less peeling and scabbing afterwards and experience a less intense recovery time altogether.

What is it like to receive fractional skin resurfacing treatments?

Receiving a fractional skin resurfacing treatment is very similar to receiving treatments with other skin resurfacing lasers. Your doctor or an assistant will thoroughly clean the skin that will be treated and will then apply a topical anesthetic to numb the treatment area. Depending on the extent of your treatment and your tolerance for pain, your doctor may recommend that you take a light sedative or anti-anxiety medicine prior to the procedure. This is something you and your doctor will discuss in advance. You may also need to wear goggles during the treatment.
